What a great question. If Jesus died and rose again from the dead, which he did, then where is he now?
The first question to ask is where was Jesus before he became the baby Jesus?
We know where he was for 33 years, right here on earth. On Good Friday after he died and before he was resurrected he was in a place that the scriptures call the Prison where souls are kept. Roman Catholics call it Purgatory. Other people call it Paradise.
Today we celebrated the Ascension when Jesus rose into Heaven. So, we are back to the question, where is Jesus now?
Let me get you some scripture.
John 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ESV Ha. I bet you thought that I was going to go to Genesis. Back to the Beginning. But in reality John goes farther back than even the beginning. He goes back to a point where there was only God. And since God is three in one; Father, Son, and Holy Ghost all three were in existence at the very, very beginning.
It is hard to imagine what it was like before creation. John did a bit of it as he went on: John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. The verse referred to in our question mentions the Glory that Jesus had before the world existed. In fact Genesis 1:1-2 gives us a picture of what that unimaginable scene looks like. Gen 1:1-2 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. ESV
So, John and the writer of Genesis are struggling to describe the indescribable, and doing a pretty good job, both of them. Creation was empty, void, without form and dark. All that existed before God spoke was The Triune God and the Glory of God because Glory is a characteristic specifically belonging to God. The world, and especially the Disciples saw the Glory of God in the face of Jesus, because Glory never departed from him.
I have taken a long road to complete the Journey to where is Jesus now? He has returned from us to the beginning of the beginning. Jesus has gone from Glory to Glory; from the Glory of fellowship with the Father and the Holy Spirit. To dwell here on earth shining His own glory among us and finally to ascend back to His original place at the throne of God in Heaven. So here is the short answer; Jesus has gone back home.
Let me add one exciting little footnote. 2 Cor 3:18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. ESV. In just ten days we will celebrate the giving of the gift of the Holy Spirit who is gradually fashioning each of us such that we will come to reflect the very Glory of the Lord. And we will join with God there in Heaven and be a part of the Glory of that most Holy and Joyful place. Jesus went home and He is preparing us to go Home with him.
