My friend asked me how can you believe in and love a man you have never met or seen; she was talking about Jesus. How do I answer that?

At first glance it does seem strange that we should fall in love with Jesus about whom we really know so little.  But then again it is not at all unusual for relationships to form by being penpals.  There is indeed a modern day scam wherein people meet by text message or by email and while one side of the relationship is a fraud, the other side is certainly genuine.  People really do fall in love that way.

But the one that stands out the most to me is virtually universal among human beings and that is the way that a mother falls in love with her child long before they are born.  Months before any details are known about this little person, sex, hair color, personality, physical attributes; all of the most basic information about a baby is unknown to a mother before the spark of love is ignited.

My guess would be that your friend has a rather skeptical outlook on relationships and that is unfortunate, and it may be because she has loved someone who was dishonest with her.  That hurts and it tends to make us wary.  But we should remember that it is possible to love a person without a lot of empirical data about that person.

I recall my early relationship with my wife.  There was a lot that I didn’t know about her, but at some point, what I didn’t know became unimportant, because what I did know of her put her in the category of a person I could really admire.  I came to discover that Holly was a woman of great character and that was the world to me.  There are not many things that she could have told about herself that would have changed my mind in any significant way.  Let’s put it this way; everybody makes mistakes, but a woman of noble character is awfully hard to find.

So yes, your friend may well have difficulty finding a man with whom she can abandon her skepticism.  I wish her good hunting.  But she needs to remember that Jesus is more than a man.  He is even more than a man of noble character.  Jesus is the man who came to show us God and in Him we find perfection.  It is not that Jesus meets all of our standards, it is that Jesus defines all of our standards and that makes a world of difference.
