My priest said we should get Closer to God. Beside prayer how would a person be able to do that?

I remember when I first met my wife.  She had a great attitude, she was friendly, even a bit flirtations, she looked good to me; indeed, I was attracted.  My problem was How was I going to get to know this woman who lived all the way across the metroplex from me?  This is the problem that every human faces from time to time throughout their lifetime.

Our relationship with God is not unlike our relationship with anybody else.  We find ourselves attracted and we try to figure out how to get to know this other person better.  I have a cautionary note here; many human relationships are based on really unhealthy habits and assumptions.  If that is the case with you, if you are accustomed to manipulating or intimidating your way into relationships, God will not allow you those broken methods to use Him or His relationship with you.

But, as the scriptures say, if you draw near to Him, He will draw near to you.  So a real relationship with God is achievable for each of us.  I suggest that the first step is to be honest.  We all too often forget that we have no secrets from God.  We also fear that is God somehow discovers who we really are that He will reject us.  The opposite is actually true.  If you entrust God with true knowledge of yourself, he will reward you with true knowledge of himself.  That relationship is the one that will reward you for the rest of your life.

So how do you grow closer?  You use every means to find out about God that is available.  We can read the scriptures to learn about God as He is revealed in those pages.  You can study about the world that He made, because you learn a lot about the artist by studying His work.  You can simply talk to Him.  As you share your life with God, you will find Him active in your life in many places and ways.  As you grow close to Him and He to you, life becomes a rich tapestry that has depth and breadth and meaning that you will crave more of.
