Should I Apologize to God when my prayers are not answered the way I wanted but His answer was what was best for me?

I have some difficulties with this question.

The first difficulty is the idea of apologizing to God.  Somehow that doesn’t seem appropriate.  If I hurt my wife or my best friend an apology is not only appropriate, it seems like it would be required.  But with God?  I would apologize to a peer, someone my equal.  But God?  What is an appropriate response to someone who is not even remotely my peer.  Would I apologize to the King of England?  Maybe I would because I am an American and I would probably see the King of England more as a peer than as someone vastly superior to me.  But apologizing to God seems like it would be a supreme insult to Him.  But maybe that’s just me.

Let’s go to the rest of it.  If I make a request of God in my prayers, that seems like it too would be an insult to God.  Who am I to tell Him what He should do even in my own case.  It would be like saying, “Hey, you might not have considered this, but would you please buy me a Mercedes Benz?  Or maybe like “you know God, I really would like to have my health back.”  Both of these things seem to say to God, that He has not considered your wants and needs carefully enough.

I come at this from what is perhaps a strange direction because I assume that the perfect prayer to God consists in the words “Thy will be done.”  God always does what is best for us even though we don’t see it that way.

However, I also believe that God has an explicit will for us, what He wants our lives to finally add up to.  He knows what He wants from us and anything we ask for that is opposed to God’s explicit will is destructive to our final purpose and therefore will not be granted.  On the other hand, what if we ask for something that doesn’t have such profound consequences?  What if there is a thing that I call God’s “permissive will?”  What if I want something that doesn’t even remotely effect God’s explicit plan for my life.  What if it doesn’t matter?  What then?

The thing is that I cannot think of anything that would have zero effect on God’s plan for my life.  There would be consequences in my owning a Mercedes Benz.  There would be consequences to me living beyond the number of my days.

The wonderful thing about all of this is that we are human beings and God knows that we are human and that we desire things that are not good for us.  Those desires color everything about our lives.  That is the very nature of sin.

I suppose that the point of the question is that God knows that we sin even when we haven’t yet figured that out.  And amazingly he forgives us even when we don’t ask for it.  Maybe he forgives us especially when we are completely ignorant of our own sin.  That means that He will also forgive us when we insult Him.

So go ahead and apologize to God.  Yes, it is an insult to him.  It probably would be like a two year old calling his grandfather by his first name.  Surprisingly inappropriate and yet the cutest thing ever.  Your apology would be heard, I imagine as a statement of your desire to please Him.  So go ahead and climb up on the lap of God as He sits on His throne in heaven and give Him a big smooch on the cheek and say “Abba Father please forgive me because I don’t know how to make you happy.  Please help me.”
