It is a wonderful thing that someone even thinks to ask this question. For someone to become curious about how to walk in partnership with God and help to parcel out His blessings speaks to someone’s desire to become more Godly. All too often people are only concerned with how to acquire the blessings of God and hardly give a thought about how to share in the joys that come with blessing others.
I think about what it must be like to be a parent or grandparent and to watch with delight as the kids dive into the pile of gifts under the Christmas tree. One the one hand is the pleasure of watching the kids delight in their new possessions. On the other hand there must be a twinge of sadness as we witness their unbridled greed and unvarnished selfishness as they squabble over every possible crumb to claim their material territory and exclude others from the plunder.
I think that one of the great parts of the growing-up journey comes when the children have children of their own. For most of us, that is when we begin to learn how to make personal sacrifices for the benefit of others. Parents routinely give of their time, money, comfort, and pleasures so that their children will have more blessings, opportunities, and experiences, often ones that the parents themselves never had the opportunity to enjoy when they were young. We must hope that these parents do not resent the sacrifices they make, but rather take joy in what they are able to do for their kids.
I know that I have gone rather far afield from the question, but not really. Because we call God “Father” for a reason. God takes great delight in blessing His children, and when we do the same thing, we have a share in the very joy of God.
So where do we go to learn these things? We go to two places, the school of life, and the Holy Scriptures. In the scriptures we learn what God is like; how He goes about loving His children. In life we try to learn how to love others the way that God loves us; faithfully, wisely and generously.
